geosynchronous satellite

A satellite in an equatorial or near-equatorial orbit that orbits with the same angular velocity as the earth, making one revolution in 24 hours.

Note that a geosynchronous orbit is not necessarily also in a geostationary orbit.
See geostationary satellite.
