diapycnal

From Glossary of Meteorology
In a direction normal to the local isopycnal surfaces.

Since isopycnal surfaces are close to horizontal, the diapycnal direction is close to vertical. The velocity of water normal to isopycnal surfaces is called diapycnal velocity, and the fluxes of properties perpendicular to an isopycnal surface are called diapycnal fluxes.
