intertropical front

(Or equatorial front;
also called tropical front.) A front presumed to exist within the equatorial trough separating the air of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

It has been generally agreed that this front, if one exists, cannot be explained in the same terms as the fronts of higher latitudes. However, the extent to which frontal theory is to be modified and the nature of the modifications are as yet very controversial questions.
