extreme value analysis

Analysis of stochastic processes for the purpose of estimating the probabilities of rare events.

Such analysis is often made difficult by uncertainties in the statistics due to an inherent scarcity of data. In meteorology, extreme value analyses have been performed for the prediction of damaging rain, maximum frost penetration, and extreme winds.
