secondary cold front

A secondary front that forms behind a frontal cyclone and within a cold air mass characterized by an appreciable horizontal temperature gradient.

These are not uncommon phenomena; however, they often appear more as weak troughs or instability lines embedded in the cold-air flow. It may be difficult to determine when or if these become true fronts.
