latent instability
Atmospheric conditions above the level of free convection when the lapse rate is steeper than moist adiabatic; has been used more as a quantitative measure than a qualitative condition.
It is becoming an obsolete term, replaced qualitatively by conditional instability and quantitatively by convective available potential energy.
