Gravitational tide

From Glossary of Meteorology

gravitational tide

Atmospheric tides and oceanic tides resulting from the combined effects of gravitational forces of the moon and sun, which vary with time at any point on Earth as it rotates.

The semidiurnal solar atmospheric tide is partly gravitational; the semidiurnal lunar atmospheric tide is totally gravitational.

See thermal tide, tide-producing force.
