inversion

A change of an atmospheric property (temperature, pressure, density) with altitude which is opposite to that of the standard atmosphere.

In meteorology, a common example of an inversion is a tropospheric temperature inversion, which is a layer in the troposphere in which temperature increases with altitude. This often occurs near the surface as a result of ground radiational cooling.
