From Glossary of Meteorology

## Manning equation

An equation relating the mean velocity of flow to channel characteristics.

It is expressed as where, at a given section,

*V*is mean velocity,*n*is the Manning's roughness coefficient (indicative of the resistance to the flow),*S*_{f}is the gradient of the total head line, and*R*is the hydraulic radius.
