Thermal vorticity advection

From Glossary of Meteorology

thermal vorticity advection

The advection or transport of the thermal vorticity by the thermal wind, in analogy to the advection of the vorticity by the wind.

If vT denotes the thermal wind and ζT the thermal vorticity, the thermal vorticity advection may be written
where H is the horizontal del operator. In a two-level baroclinic model of the atmosphere, the thermal vorticity advection contributes to the development of geostrophic vorticity and is a measure of the conversion of potential energy into kinetic energy of cyclonic-scale flow.
