## wave vector

The vector

**k**in the solution of a wave equation expressed as the product of a time- varying function and*A*exp(*i***k**·**x**), where**x**is the position vector and*A*is constant in space and time. The wave vector may, in general, be complex, and its real and imaginary parts need not be parallel, in which instance the wave is inhomogeneous.
