rain-intensity gauge

(Also called rain-rate gauge, rate-of-rainfall gauge.) An instrument that measures the rate at which rain is falling.

In the Jardi design, water from the rain collector enters a chamber containing a float with a tapered needle that controls the rate of outflow. The higher the rain rate, the higher the float, and the greater the outflow.

The amount of precipitation of any type (including the liquid equivalent of frozen hydrometeors); usually taken as that amount measured by means of a rain gauge (thus a small, varying amount of direct condensation is included).
